Former Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan hit out at the government for the team’s absence from the ICC men’s T20 World Cup 2026, calling the decision a major mistake and a big blow for cricket in the country.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the EUT20 Belgium jersey launch event, the veteran all-rounder said the move to skip the tournament was a serious misstep. “I think it’s a blunder from the government side that they took the decision not to participate in that World Cup,” Shakib said.

He explained that missing a global event like the World Cup affects not just the players but also the fans, especially in a country where cricket is followed passionately. “I think that’s a big loss. Great miss as far as Bangladesh cricket is concerned. Because we as a country love watching our players playing World Cups, playing matches,” he said.

“We are a cricket-loving country. And a country like Bangladesh not participating in the World Cup was such a big miss,” he added.
Bangladesh had decided not to take part in the tournament, which was held in India, citing security concerns and what it described as issues related to national dignity. The decision came amid strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Bangladesh had also requested that their matches be shifted to Sri Lanka, but the request was not accepted, leading to their withdrawal. They were eventually replaced by Scotland in the competition.
Despite the disappointment of missing out on the World Cup, Shakib said he remains positive about the direction in which Bangladesh cricket is heading. He pointed to recent performances as a sign of progress, highlighting the team’s win over New Zealand.
“I think the team is playing really well at this moment. They just beat New Zealand. They won the first T20 against New Zealand. So they are good teams. Previously, it used to be individuals. Now it’s more about the team. And I think that’s the better way to go forward,” he said.
He also spoke about the emerging talent in the squad, saying that a mix of experienced players and youngsters gives him confidence about the future. “I don’t know how to suggest names, but most players are promising, and they are doing really well. There are some experienced players with the new generation coming up. I think we have a good future,” he said.
